New business spotlight on Martino’s Hair II
Martin Jennings felt it was time to expand his hair styling business and figured what better way to do that than to set up shop in the west end of Williamsport.
Martino’s Hair II opened up in April at 1969 W. Fourth St.
“I thought this end of town where there were no other (hair salons) would be a good option,” he said. “It gives the West End people a chance to go to a place closer.”
His newly opened business complements Martino’s Hair, a long established hair salon in operation for 19 years. Jennings said it’s fun to be in the hair business, although it’s the type of enterprise that can take a while to become established. So far, business has been good at his new place, he said.
Jennings likes its location along busy West Fourth Street right next to Dunkin’ Donuts.
“You’ll get visibility here,” he said. “We serve the West End, DuBoistown and Lycoming Creek Road.”
Jennings has been in the hair business for a number of years, and he comes from a family of barbers and hair stylists.
He said his mother, Mary Jennings, was the first female barber in Williamsport.
“We do highlights, coloring, perms and facial waxing,” he said.
He employs six people. For a number of years, Jennings has owned and operated Martino’s Hair along the Golden Strip. He had bought the business from his brother in 1995 when it operated under the name, Professional Hair Styling. Jennings later moved the business to the Loyal Plaza and renamed it Martino’s Hair.
“People would always say, ‘when are you going to open up another place?’ ” he said.
Jennings sometimes thought it might be a good idea, but it wasn’t until an opportunity opened up earlier this year that he decided to take action.
The new business accepts both male and female customers either by walk-in or appointment.
He said he likes to advertise it as a family type salon.
“We look forward to serving the community,” he said. “We make it easy for people to walk in and get their hair cut without much of a wait.”
He said he gets most of his business through word of mouth.
