New business spotlight on Jenifer Starr Photography

Jenifer Starr thought music was her real passion.

Funny how one’s life plans can change.

Starr thinks she made the right choice by deciding to pursue photography and now owns her own studio in Williamsport.

“It’s a great place to be,” she said. “I love it here. You walk in here and you are instantly inspired.”

Starr is yet another local resident setting up shop at the Pajama Factory – a haven for artists, photographers, writers and others who hope to combine their passion for arts with earning a dollar. She opened the studio in October.

“I needed a place besides my home to start,” she said.

Starr does a lot of portrait photography, but fine art as well. She feels she brings a certain unique approach to her photography.

“I’m told I have a new eye or fresh eye,” she said. “I like to pose people differently. I try to capture moments that are more candid.”

She said she likes to find out what people really want from the shots she takes.

Starr, who will pick up an associate’s degree from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in February, said she’s been interested in photography since she was a kid and played around with a 35mm camera.

But music was her first love and after graduating in 1998 from Montoursville Area High School, it was off to Edinboro University to further her studies in that area.

“Then, I decided I didn’t want to do that,” she said.

The years went by and after giving birth to her daughter in 2006, she took up the camera once again and began taking photos of her.

“People saw them and wanted to know what I charged for them,” she said.

That got Starr to thinking.

A few years later, she enrolled in art school. Once she graduates, she plans to have even more time to devote to her new business. She said the most challenging part of getting her enterprise up and running is juggling it with school, a full-time job and being a single mother.

Starr’s business can be found in Building 10 of the Pajama Factory, 1307 Park Ave. and online at www.facebook.com/StarrPhotography4.
