Restaurant offers new technology to customers

An area restaurant has embraced technology allowing patrons to alert servers and place orders – all from the palm of their hands.

“It’s really unique technology,” said Tom Ludwig, owner of Dutch Haven Restaurant, 201 Bald Eagle St., Lock Haven. “People can see their orders in real time. They can input their own credit cards. Or they can use PayPal.”

The SCR Business Systems provides the Aloha Point of Sale System used by the restaurant which most recently implemented the NCR Mobile Pay application.

Kelley Nittinger, point of sale provider for SCR Business Systems, called the application a kind of “computerized cash register.”

And it can easily be used by a customer with a SmartPhone.

A waitress come to a patron’s table with a slip of paper with a QR code.

By scanning the QR code, customers can access their checks, place additional orders, even pay their bills.

“You have to have a QR reader on your phone,” Nittinger said. “Or you can go to a website on your phone to get the QR code.”

Dutch Haven, Nittinger said, is one of the few restaurants in the region using the technology released about a year ago.

“I already have places in State College that have contacted us,” she said. “They want to implement it in their systems.”

Nittinger noted that NCR Mobile Pay encrypts and securely accepts the credit card information.

“It’s a secure system,” added Amy Yocum, a partner in the restaurant.

Ludwig said some if not most customers are taking advantage of the technology since it was introduced at the restaurant about three months ago.

“It’s a slow process, but people are getting used to it,” he said.

The restaurant’s weekly chicken wings night, which draws younger patrons, seems to attract the heaviest users of the NCR Mobile Pay application.

“It’s cool technology,” Yocum said.

Overall, NCR Mobile Pay has drawn positive feedback.

Nittinger noted the technology streamlines and improves the accuracy of the order service.

SCR Business Systems, located in Shamokin Dam, provides point of sale systems and surveillance options to restaurants and clubs in the area.
