New Business Spotlight on Valentines House of Beauty

The 1400 block of Memorial Avenue is showing signs of commerical enterprise.

Less than two years ago, Peg & Bill’s Diner II opened in the neighborhood. Valentines House of Beauty is a newly opened beauty salon located next to the restaurant.

Corria Agnew said she always wanted to have her own business. A graduate of the Empire Beauty School, she said she started planning the business more than a year ago.

“My original idea was to go into the Pajama Factory,” she said.

But when a spot opened up at 1408 Memorial Ave. she decided to open it there. Hair styling, perms and shampoos are among the services offered. Agnew employs one person.

She accepts both appointment and walk-in customers.

Agnew conceded that running her own business poses its share of challenges.

“It’s a learning experience but I’m learning from my mistakes,” she said.

Much of her business, she said, comes through word-of-mouth. Recently, a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local community leaders was held to officially present the business to Williamsport.

Mayor Gabriel J. Campana thanked Agnew for investing in the city.

“Small business is the backbone of our country, both locally and nationally,” added Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce President Vincent Matteo.

Entrepreneurs, he noted, help make communities better places to live.

Agnew is among transplants to Williamsport who are helping starting businesses and helping breathe economic life into the city. She moved from Cleveland with her husband and four children.

“I love Williamsport,” she said. “It’s a great place to raise a family.”

Hours for her business are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The phone number is 570-505-3570.
