Art studio to hold ‘1st Friday’ grand opening

The Madd Potter is a new pottery studio that offers lessons, pottery sales and paper mache. Proprietor Laura J. Roan, a news release said, has been preparing and building inventory for her First Friday grand opening May 2.

Roan, the news release said, “always has been an artist in one form or another.” When she was young she made some of her own clothes. In 1993 Laura established “The Design Studio” and “90’s Hats” in downtown Williamsport, behind the Bullfrog Brewery, where she designed hats, scarves and gloves. She also made turbans for cancer victims.

Roan also concentrated on her paper machemask making. She is known as the official Mardi Gras mask maker of Williamsport Mardi Gras since its inception. During this time she made full-size Humpty Dumpty egg for the Community Art Theater League.

Roan has hosted numerous workshops and, the news release said, has been a visiting artist at the Schick Elementary School, the Williamsport Area and St. John Neumann Regional School District, helping children make masks and hats and paper machecars for more than 10 years. She carved the giant pumpkin at the Herdic House for many years and was named the “puppet queen” by the first grade class at the old Becht Elementary School for all the puppets and a cardboard theatre that she made and donated to the school. She volunteered at the Lycoming Day Nursery making masks with the children.
