New business spotlight on Woodrich
Raffaele Colone found his calling as a teenager when he started working in his friend’s woodshop.
Now, he crafts home furnishings from the hardwoods of Pennsylvania and sells them from his newly opened downtown Williamsport store.
“I love it,” he said. “It’s my passion. It’s what I do.”
Colone, 35, opened up Woodrich, 357 Market St., in March. Inside the doors customers are greeted by some of his craftsmanship – conference tables, countertops, bar tops, and other unique home or office furnishings.
Colone recovers fallen or cut trees that other people might otherwise have no use for to fashion his products which he dubs “urban tree slab furniture.”
Some of his work, he said, can be found in area restaurants and businesses – Bullfrog Brewery, Pier 87 Bar & Grill, Alabaster Coffee & Tea Company, Cloud 9 Airport Restaurant.
“It’s unique furnishings,” he said.
Colone, who holds an associate’s degree in Forestry from Pennsylvania College of Technology, worked as an arborist for a number of years before deciding to go into business.
“This is the end product,” he said, referring to one of the tables he cut and crafted out of hardwood.
What customers don’t see is all the hard work that goes into creating a table or other piece.
“It’s intensive work,” he said.
There is the whole process of cutting logs in flitches, air drying and kiln drying the wood. A flitch is a longitudinal section of a log. Kiln drying, he explained, is a process of removing the wood’s moisture.
And when he’s not busy with woodworking, there’s the other aspect of the business – finding and dealing with customers, going to sites to pick up timber.
“I’m very busy,” he said.
But it’s all worth it too. Beyond the woodworking, Colone loves being outdoors. Frank Rampulla, a woodworker, is his lone employee.
He gives a lot of credit to his family for supporting him in his business endeavor.
