Sun-Gazette announces 2016 employee of the year

KAREN VIBERT-KENNEDY/Sun-Gazette Billing clerk Cathy Hendricks works in her office at the Williamsport Sun-Gazette’s building on West Fourth Street.

Williamsport Sun-Gazette employee Cathy Hendricks, is the 2016 employee of the year, and while it was a surprise to her, many say it is a well-deserved honor.

“I’m glad they picked her,” Office Manager Jim Profeta said. Profeta is Hendrick’s department head and he nominated her for the award. While other department heads also nominated employees, in the end Hendricks was chosen.

“Every year since 2009 an employee of the year is chosen in recognition of not only daily service, but also at times going above and beyond in their duties,” said Publisher Bernard A. Oravec. “I’m very proud that Cathy Hendricks is the employee of the year for 2016, and along with everyone on the staff at the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, she is dedicated to doing the best job possible.”

Hendricks was humble about the honor, even though she is the first employee from the business department to receive the award.

“I just come to work and do my job. Anybody needs help, I help them,” Hendricks said.

“I’m pretty much what you see is what you get,” Hendricks said.

Profeta said Hendricks brings a lot to the newspaper.

“Her commitment to the Sun-Gazette is really great,” Profeta said. “She is resourceful and always willing to help.”

Hendricks has worked at the newspaper for the past six years. She is a billing clerk, but her list of responsibilities stretches beyond that title. In addition to her daily duties of dealing with advertising accounts, Hendricks assists with the office switchboard, processes the mail for the company and volunteers her time to the Sun-Gazette’s Taste of Home production.

But to many of her co-workers, Hendricks also is the “resident therapist” for the office. Always willing to listen and help with problems.

“She’s an easy person to get along with,” Profeta said.

When Profeta decides who to nominate each year he looks at commitment, leadership, loyalty and honesty.

Hendricks said she enjoys her work and her friends at the office. She plans to continue working at the Sun-Gazette for a while, or “maybe till they get rid of me,” she joked.

In addition to the the award, Hendricks received a $50 gift card and free parking for the entire year.

Past winners of the award are Suzanne Engler, classified; Dave Schlesinger, circulation; Phil Holmes, editorial; Jonathan Youmans, maintenance; Dottie Johnson, retail advertising; Mallory Clark, composing; and Beverly Parker, mailroom.
