Mobile unit brings job opportunities

The Link is up and running.

The mobile career center, which hit the road in July, connects businesses to job seekers throughout central Pennsylvania.

The Link brings a variety of services to those who are otherwise under-served, according to Erica Mulberger, executive director of the Central Pennsylvania Workforce Development Corp.

“We had actually been trying to think of something to reach rural communities where people have trouble reaching CareerLink,” she said. “We thought it would be better to take something to them.”

The Link is staffed by expert professionals who can help businesses find talent and job seekers find opportunities.

The mobile unit includes seven computers, internet, a printer, and a presentation screen.

“It’s the first one launched in the state,” she said.

The state Department of Labor and Industry made available a $200,000 grant for funding the pilot program operated by Central Susquehanna Opportunities Inc.

Mulberger said the The Link is out five days a week, making one stop per day.

It serves Lycoming, Centre, Clinton, Columbia, Mifflin, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties.

“It is going to a lot of libraries in the nine-county area. In Williamsport it also goes to the Pre-Release Center,” she said.

Stops have also included food banks and other locations.

“We really just want to reach all different groups,” she said.

Mulberger said the Link’s services include on-site testing of employees at job sites, worker training, resume and cover letter review, and workshops.

Businesses can get help with posting jobs and match job seekers to employment.

“Businesses should be aware we can come to them,” Mulberger said. “It’s not just for the job seeker.”

As yet, it’s a bit early to evaluate The Link’s overall benefits.

“There is a lot of call for getting it out in the community,” she said. “We are going to be tracking how often people are using it.”

The Link is scheduled to be in Lycoming County at the Muncy Public Library, Muncy from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1.
