Free workshop Wednesday addresses

unemployment compensation law

IMC is offering a free “Unemployment Compensation 101” seminar from 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, in Williamsport.

This seminar provides an overview of the claims filing process, the determination process and appeal rights. It includes samples of the forms that an employer may receive when a claim is opened, how they are used to determine the claimant’s eligibility and to protect the employer’s liability, and discusses the specific time frame to respond to these forms and the importance of responding timely.

Recent changes to the state unemployment compensation law require employers to provide the service center with timely and accurate separation information. This seminar explains how State Information Data Exchange System can help the employer meet this requirement and how to apply for this free service.

Nancy Smithbauer, workforce development representative for unemployment compensation has been employed by the state Department of Labor and Industry for 16 years, having been a claims examiner for nearly 10 of those years. Nancy helps employers and claimants understand the unemployment compensation laws and assists with navigating the process to ensure the proper application of the program. She is a member of the rapid response coordination services team that provides information and assistance to workers in the event of a lay off or closure. Smithbauer is also a “trouble shooter” for individuals and employers who are in need of assistance with a claim. Her service area spans across 12 counties.

The West Branch Human Resources Society will host speaker Tony Samento, president of Samento Industrial Training Systems, from 8 to 10 a.m., Wednesday. Samento assists companies in complying with federal regulations while laying the foundations to create an uncompromising safety culture. Samento always engages his audience and is one of the group’s most popular speakers.

Workshop helps with

government contracts

Businesses can attend a free hands-on workshop to learn online resources for government contracting, assisted by SEDA-Council of Governments Procurement Technical Assistance Center.

It will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursday at the Innovative Manufacturers’ Center, 1127 W. Fourth St., Williamsport.

The training will be in a computer lab so participants can navigate and explore government Internet sites. It will feature state and federal government contracting Internet sites and resources.

Sites to be searched include: vendor registrations for state and federal contracting, federal procurement forecasts, federal sites for bids and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania bid notification sites

A leadership program offered this fall by Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Pennsylvania College of Technology focuses on mid-level managers and those aspiring to move into those positions.

Classes for the Mid-Level Manager Program will be held in the Klump Academic Center on Penn College’s main campus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays (Oct. 18; Nov. 1, 15 and 29; and Dec. 13).

Through a series of 10 modules covered in those five days, participants will explore and practice key areas of management focusing on skills required to perform successfully with people, management and processes.

Electric utility firm

promotes diversity

PPL Electric Utilities is hosting a meet-and-greet event for the leaders of diversity-owned businesses who are interested in becoming PPL suppliers.

The free event will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 17, at PPL Conference Center at Walbert, 1639 Church Road, Allentown.

It is open to women, minorities, veterans, the disabled, members of the LGBT community, as well as disadvantaged and HUBZone businesses, according to a news release.

“Several dozen people attended this event last year and we are hoping to see even more at this year’s event,” said David Amico, PPL’s supply chain director, according to the news release.
