WAHS art students honored
Williamsport Area High School art students Maria Balestino and Madison Vermilya were named semifinalists in the “The Dream @ 50 Art Contest,” which invited K-12 students in 10 major U.S. cities to create pieces of artwork inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream Speech.”
The 2D visual arts students at WAHS answered the call and were asked to submit artwork to the Philadelphia division by Project Director Richard Karz. Balestino and Vermilya were chosen by the judges to represent Williamsport at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Feb. 20, and were honored at a ceremony.
At the ceremony, the audience celebrated the work of MLK through art, dance and song. Speakers included Karz of Karz Productions, curators from the museum and the assistant superintendent of the school district of Philadelphia.
The WAHS student artwork stood out and was recognized by the judges for its composition, originality of design and attention to detail.
