Winners of academic decathlon announced

The Academic Decathlon of Central Pennsylvania held its regional competition in February at South Williamsport Area High School.

The Montoursville Area High School team came in first place out of seven teams.

South Williamsport Area High School came in 3rd place and St. John Neumann Regional Academy came in 5th place.

Montoursville and South Williamsport both qualified for state finals, which will be held in State College this month.

Individual medal winners from Montoursville were given to the following students by division.

Honors Division

Nicole Payne, grade 12: Gold in math, economics and interview; silver in social science, music and science; bronze in speech; and the silver medal for overall score.

Stephanie Sorage, grade 12: Silver in art; bronze in math and the bronze medal for overall score.

Tori Garman, grade 12: Gold in interview; silver in essay; bronze in math, music, language and literature and speech.

Scholastic Division

Hunter Vogan, grade 12: Silver in social science, art and science; and bronze in essay.

Abby Caviston, grade 12: Silver in interview and bronze in art.

Saya Koontz, grade 12: Bronze in science and economics.

Varsity Division

Adam Rose, grade 12: Bronze in science and essay.

Saundra Simpson, grade 12: Gold in art, science and interview; silver in essay and language and Literature; bronze in music, economics and Speech; and the silver medal for overall score.

Cody Lathrop grade 12: First Montour Decathlete ever to medal in all 10 events in one meet. Gold in essay, music, language and literature, and economics; silver in art, social science, science and speech; bronze in math and interview; and the gold medal for overall score.

Also participating as alternates for Montoursville were seniors Bud Anthony, Travis Bastian, Anthony Caputo, Dalton Cristini and David Modispaw; junior Alyssa Kriner; and freshmen Kyra Anthony and Joe Rose.
