Budget expert Sawhill to offer fiscal advice

LEWISBURG – Nationally known budget expert Isabel Sawhill will give the talk, “Avoiding fiscal shoals in troubled political waters,” Wednesday, April 24, at 7 p.m. in the Trout Auditorium of the Vaughan Literature Building at Bucknell University.

The talk, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Bucknell Institute for Public Policy and the Departments of Economics, Political Science, and Sociology and Anthropology.

A Senior Fellow in Economic Studies, Sawhill serves as co-director of the Brookings Institution’s Budgeting for National Priorities Project as well as co-director of the Center on Children and Families.

In 2009, she began the Social Genome Project, an initiative by the Center on Children and Families that seeks to determine how to increase economic opportunity for disadvantaged children. She helped to found the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and serves as board president.

Sawhill also served as an associate director at the Office of Management and Budget from 1993 to 1995, where her responsibilities included all of the human resource programs of the federal government, accounting for one third of the federal budget.

She has been a Senior Fellow with the Urban Institute, director of the National Commission for Employment Policy, and president of the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management.

The recipient of a doctorate from New York University, she has been a visiting professor at Georgetown Law School.
