Local students honored at awards luncheon
SELINSGROVE – Two local students were recognized at Susquehanna University’s annual student awards luncheon in May.
Marissa Gummo, of Montoursville, received the Patricia Martin Outstanding Educator Award.
The award was established in honor of Patricia Martin upon her retirement from the Susquehanna education department in 2008. This award recognizes a graduating senior for exemplary classroom leadership and reflective practice.
Gummo is a recent graduate who majored in elementary education. She is a 2009 graduate of Montoursville Area High School and the daughter of John Gummo and Sheri Ruffing.
Esther Lapitan, of Canton, received the John Longaker Award in history.
The award is named for Jack Longaker, a 30-year faculty member in the Susquehanna history department who retired in 1993.
Lapitan is a recent graduate who majored in history and political science.
She is a 2009 graduate of Canton Area High School and the daughter of Gideon and Betty Lapitan.
