Memorial scholarship to benefit Hughesville High School students
A new scholarship fund in the East Lycoming School District will memorialize a 1998 Hughesville High School graduate who lost his battle with liver disease last year.
Christopher T. Secules, who passed away in August 2012 while waiting for a liver transplant, was known for his interest in music and theater, how he loved to sing, and his involvement in Boy Scouts and his church. The Christopher T. Secules Memorial Scholarship will provide a $500 award each year to a high school senior who best exemplifies his musical involvement, academic interests and abilities and overall personality.
The annual recipients of the Christopher T. Secules Memorial Scholarship will be chosen from applicants who reside in the East Lycoming School District, who have been accepted to an institution of higher learning with an intended major in music, engineering, computer science/technology or medicine and who have been involved in music or musical theater.
Christopher Secules was an alumnus of Lafayette College, Easton. He graduated in 2002 with a bachelor degree in electrical and computer engineering. During his time at Lafayette College, he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity, performed in the pep band and in musicals with the Marquis Players, and sang with the Chorduroys, an a cappella group.
Christopher Secules earned his master’s degree from Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey and worked at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, N.J. for 10 years. He resided in Bethlehem, Pa., with his wife and 2 children when he passed away at the age of 32.
The recipient of the first award from the Christopher T. Secules Memorial Scholarship will be announced at the Hughesville High School graduation ceremony in the spring of 2014.
Donations are being accepted to support this new scholarship. Anyone interested in making a gift may mail it to the Christopher T. Secules Memorial Fund, c/o Sovereign Bank, 32 N. Main St., Hughesville, PA 17737.
“Any support is appreciated to keep Chris’s memory alive through this scholarship award,” said Christopher’s mother, Karen Secules.
A dinner and silent auction will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hughesville to raise funds for the scholarship.
Springman’s Country Store of Pennsdale will cater the event.
There is a fee for tickets and children under five are free.
Tickets can be purchased in advance from Tom and Karen Secules, 221 DeWald Lane, Hughesville, PA 17737, by calling 584-4670, by calling Betty Jo Soohy at 570-584-2675 or at Trinity Lutheran Church Office.
Anyone who would like to donate a basket for the silent auction at the event can contact Karen Secules or Betty Jo Soohy.
The family is also extending an invitation to those who sang with Christopher to come prepared to sing a song, preferably Broadway music, during dinner. Anyone interested in singing should also contact Karen Secules prior to the event so they can be added to the performance schedule.
