Author Scott Russell Sanders to speak at MU

MANSFIELD -Author and educator Scott Russell Sanders will visit Mansfield University to make presentations on Sept. 18 to 19.

On Wednesday, Sept. 18, Sanders will make a multi-media presentation entitled “From Consumerism to Caretaking” in Allen Hall, Room 104 at 7:30 p.m.

This presentation will focus on ideas that came from Sanders’ book, “A Conservationist Manifesto,” explaining a necessary shift he sees we need to make and how the liberal arts are instrumental in this transition.

On Thursday, Sept. 19, Sanders will present “Hope in a Time of Environmental Crisis,” at 7:30 p.m. in Straughn Hall.

In this presentation, Sanders will speak about and read from his book “Hunting for Hope: A Father’s Journeys,” which was chosen as this year’s First Year Experience (FYE) common reading for MU freshman.

After the presentation there will be time for questions and answers.

Sanders is the author of 20 books of fiction and nonfiction, including A Private History of Aweand A Conservationist Manifesto.

The best of his essays from the past 30 years, plus nine new essays, are collected in “Earth Works,” published in 2012 by Indiana University Press. Among his honors are the Lannan Literary Award, John Burroughs Essay Award, Mark Twain Award, Cecil Woods Award for Nonfiction, Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award, and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
