Biology professor honored for educational excellence

David L. Evans, professor of biology (anatomy and physiology) at Pennsylvania College of Technology, has been honored with the 2013 President’s Medal by the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society.

HAPS promotes excellence in the teaching of human anatomy and physiology and has approximately 1,700 members. The society’s President’s Medal recognizes a member who has provided exemplary service to HAPS.

Evans was lauded for his contributions as the content developer and editor of “What’s New in A&P,” a popular weekly feature on the society’s website. The report highlights initiatives in the field of anatomy and physiology and is read by professors, as well as students.

The President’s Medal was awarded at the HAPS annual meeting held May 25 through 29 in Las Vegas. The recipient of the award receives a medal and certificate plus registration fees for an annual conference of his or her choice. An article describing the honoree’s contributions is featured in the society’s publication, HAPS-Educator.

“David has been a member of HAPS for more than 20 years and, during that time, has been one of our most active members. In recent years, David has single-handedly been responsible for one of the most popular features of our website, ‘What’s New in A&P,’ ” said Dee U. Silverthorn, president of HAPS. “HAPS is proud to have David as a member, and we look forward to working with him to improve anatomy and physiology education in the years to come.”

Evans has acted as the society’s public affairs officer and chair of its Public Affairs Committee. He also has served on the editorial board of HAPS-Educator; on the society’s Web, Nominating and Marketing committees; and on its Distance Learning Task Force.

Evans joined the Penn College faculty in 1990. He previously taught at American University of Beirut in Lebanon. He holds a doctorate from the University of Illinois, a master’s degree from Utah State University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona.

An elected member of three honorary societies – Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society; Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society; and The Royal Entomological Society – Evans also serves on the editorial board of BioScience, the peer-reviewed journal of the American Institute of Biological Sciences. He is a life member of the Lepidopterists’ Society, a problem captain for Odyssey of the Mind and a member of the Williamsport Book Club.
