Convocation kicks off new academic year at Mansfield
MANSFIELD – Mansfield University held its convocation Aug. 23. Jeffrey Bosworth, associate professor of History and Political Science, was the featured speaker.
In his address, “Hunting for Hope in Modern America,” Bosworth chronicled the challenges the incoming students will face in the future and listed the advantages they will have as they face those challenges.
He then urged the new students to take advantage of the opportunities they have before them.
“Be curious about the world around you, you don’t know what you don’t know about,” Bosworth said. “So try things out, take a course because you don’t know what it is or because it just sounds interesting. Look for ways to challenge yourself academically, this is how you learn and grow. Expose yourself to different ideas and ways of thinking about the world, you have no idea how this will help you the rest of your life.”
Bosworth added that responsibility also is a big part of achieving success.
“The fundamental purpose of this institution is to educate you,” he said. “You have to play your part and become interested in your own education. We can teach you, but you have to be willing to put the work into learning.”
President Fran Hendricks welcomed the campus community. He recalled being in the position of the college’s students nearly 40 years ago as an incoming freshman at Mansfield.
“For over 150 years, students just like you have made their way to Mansfield to study,” Hendricks said. “You are the next chapter of students who will discover themselves and their talents here. At Mansfield University, when we say ‘it’s all about you’ we mean it in an endearing way. Student success is our primary goal. We are committed to preparing you for your life’s journey.”
Hendricks, a 1979 graduate who spent more than 33 years in the Air Force, retiring as a brigadier general, told the newest Mountaineers, “I want every student who comes to MU to have the same opportunities I have been blessed with. Class 2017, it is all about you; class 2017, it is your time; class 2017, mount up, move out and lead.”
