St. John Neumann Academic Decathlon team places first
The St. John Neumann Academic Decathlon team competed at Phillipsburg-Osceola High School on Nov. 7. The Neumann team earned first place in the Susquehanna League, and fifth place overall. The following team members earned medals in their respective categories:
Honors division – Tatiana Chichilla, sophomore, bronze in essay; Cassandra Crouse, freshman, bronze in music; Benjamin Facey, senior, bronze in music, bronze overall score; Alyssa Gregory, senior, silver in essay, silver in music; Geoffrey Kist, senior, bronze in language and literature, silver in art; Joseph Lippert, junior, gold in essay, bronze in art, silver overall score; Olivia Pierce, sophomore, gold in language and literature; Andrew Roman, sophomore, bronze in language and literature; Ryenn Yearick, freshman, silver in language and literature, gold in art, gold overall score.
Scholastic division – Hayden Forquer, senior, bronze in essay.
Varsity division – Isabel Gabinskiy, sophomore, gold in essay, music, and overall score, bronze in language and literature, and art; Lucas Nelson, senior, gold in language and literature, art, and music, bronze overall score.
The St. John Neumann Academic Decathlon team is 25 members strong and is led by faculty advisor Sara Baszczewski.
The Academic Decathlon is a team competition wherein students match their intellects with students from other schools. Students are tested in 10 categories, including art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, mathematics, music, science, social science and speech. Academic Decathlon provides students of all learning levels the opportunity to excel academically through team competition.
Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded for individual events and total scores. Winning teams advance through the local, regional, and state levels of competition. The state champions compete at the national finals. The 2014 National Competition will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The theme for the 201314 Academic Decathlon season is World War I.
The next scrimmage for the Neumann team will be held at Moshannon Valley High School, Houtzdale, on Dec. 16. The Regional competition will be held at Penns Valley High School, Woodward, on Jan. 31.
