Student works with Bone Marrow Donor program

Madeline Dincher, of Williamsport and senior at St. John Neumann Regional Academy, is working with “Be the Match” the National Bone Marrow Donor program. According to the website, thousands of people are diagnosed every year with life-threatening blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma.

Over the past 25 years Be The Match, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), has managed the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world. On Nov. 5 she set-up with representatives from the organization outside the Keystone Dining Room of the Pennsylvania College of Technology.

As part of Dincher’s senior project, she is working with the organization to raise awareness about the “Be the Match” mission and signing students up for the registry. She said she wants the students to see they can make a difference in someone’s life by signing up.

She spoke to students about the organization and how to become a donor.

Dincher had 78 people sign up for be the match bone marrow registry. Carl Shaner, health service director at Pennsylvania College of Technology was instrumental in helping her by putting flyers all over the campus and sent faculty over to the drive, he helped to make arrangements directing her where she could set up my drive for best results.

Dincher also has a website called Maddies Mission, for fundraising for the “Be the Match” www.bethematch foundation.org/goto/maddiesmission.

This helps to offset the cost to help people go on the registery, which costs $100 per person.
