Montoursville places 4th at academic decathlon

The Academic Decathlon of Central Pennsylvania held its regional competition for the 2013-14 year on Jan. 31 at Penns Valley High School in Spring Mills.

Montoursville’s team came in fourth place out of six teams. This was high enough to qualify the team for the state finals for the seventh consecutive year.

Medal winners were:

Honors division

Amelia Deacon (11th) – gold in math, bronze in essay, music, science, economics and language and literature; and Brittany Bergquist (10th) – bronze in social science.

Scholastic division

Haylee Young (11th) – bronze in math, social science and language and literature.

Varsity division

Hunter Burleson (12th) – gold in interview, silver in speech, art and math, bronze in essay, economics, social science, science and language and literature and bronze for overall score; Michael Leight (12th) – gold in math, silver in economics, bronze in music and interview; and Aiyana Allanson (12th) – silver in music and bronze in art.

Also participating for Montoursville were senior Alyssa Kriner, sophomores Kyra Anthony and Ashley Cipcic and freshman Matt Marks.

The state finals will be held on Feb. 28 and March 1 at Souderton Area High School near Philadelphia.
