DALLAS, Pa. – Misericordia University will hold an open house program on the Back Mountain campus for high school students and their parents at 9 a.m. on March 29.
The program offers an informative tour of the more than 124-acre campus, meetings with Misericordia students, faculty and coaches, as well as information sessions with admissions and financial aid counselors.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. in the Anderson Sports and Health Center at the North Gate of the upper campus. A special “Meet the Coaches” session will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. The open house program will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The schedule includes refreshments, campus tours, a faculty session and lunch, and meetings with representatives of student services, athletics and financial aid. A session will also be held on the university’s Alternative Learner’s Project for students with learning disabilities.
Misericordia University offers a liberal arts curriculum with 34 academic programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. The university has more than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students in full- and part-time academic programs.
All prospective students will have an opportunity to tour numerous buildings on campus, including the 40,000-square-foot John J. Passan Hall, 100 Lake St. Passan Hall houses state-of-the-art simulator laboratories and classrooms in the nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language pathology programs of the College of Health Sciences.
The tours also will offer a look at the new athletic facilities, including Tambur Field, the new home to Cougar Baseball, and the University’s new John and Mary Metz Field House, adjacent to Manglesdorf Field. The University added football to its roster for the 2012 season and is just one of two schools in the Middle Atlantic Conference to offer all 23 varsity sports sponsored by the conference.
In the 2012 National Survey of Student Engagement, 94 percent of Misericordia freshmen gave the school a high grade compared to 88 percent at other schools surveyed, and overwhelmingly rated the faculty as available, helpful and sympathetic. Misericordia is also ranked in the top tier, Best Regional Universities – North category of the 2013 U.S. News and World Report America’s Best Colleges and is also ranked as a Best Northeast College by the Princeton Review.
The Misericordia University Department of Nursing also received national and state recognition recently. MU nursing students who recently graduated from the Bachelor of Science degree program achieved a pass rate that was 16 percentage points higher than the national average for pass rates on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) for baccalaureate degree students during the past year.
Recent Misericordia University BSN graduates achieved a 98.08 percent pass rate for first-time test-takers far exceeding both the average national pass rate of 82.07 percent and the average pass rate in Pennsylvania of 85.31 for baccalaureate degree programs. It marks the third year in a row that the nursing program’s pass rates surpassed the state and national averages.
The Misericordia University Teacher Education Program is also one of only 105 teacher preparation programs in the country and one of only seven in Pennsylvania to be named to the Honor Roll in the 2013 National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) ratings released by U.S. News & World Report on June 18, 2013.
Misericordia University’s undergraduate secondary education program received three out of four stars in the national report, “Teacher Prep Review: A Review of the Nation’s Teacher Preparation Programs 2013.” The three-star designation means the Misericordia University Teacher Education Program “provides strong preparation,” according to the report. In northeastern Pennsylvania, Misericordia University is one of only two schools to be recognized nationally. Four schools achieved a four-star ranking in the NCATE study.
