WAHS Big Band plays at WVIA studio

The Williamsport Area High School Big Band recently was invited to play at the WVIA TV studio, where they had the opportunity to record and perform with four great jazz musicians: Virginia Mayhew, tenor sax; Jim Ridl, piano; Josh Davis, bass; and Bill Goodwin, drums.

Music performed included charts by Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and Chuck Mangione.

Through a grant funded by the Degenstein Foundation for the Chiaroscuro Jazz Conservancy, Williamsport band students were able to spend many hours learning about jazz performance techniques while connecting with musicians who have helped shape the trends in American jazz music for the last five decades as writers, arrangers and performers.

WVIA plans to produce a television program featuring the Millionaire Big Band in performance with the pros who worked throughout the day with the students. The show will include highlights of rehearsals, student interviews, and the full performance from the TV studio. It will air on WVIA sometime in late August or September, just in time for the new school year.
