LHU students take field experience course aboard the Flagship Niagara
LOCK HAVEN – Six Lock Haven University students recently set sail with Dr. Joe Calabrese to ports in Erie; Put-in-Bay, Ohio; and Alpena, Michigan for a field experience course.
Through hands-on learning, students studied the interactions between humans and ecology in a natural setting, tracing the science, history and policy of the great lakes from Lake Erie to Lake Huron, then on to Lake Michigan.
Students sailed from June 10 until July 4 aboard the U.S. Brig Niagara, a 19th century replica naval vessel.
The flagship has served as an educational sailing program setting since it first set sail in 1990.
While aboard the ship, students took water samples, trawled fish and dissected them and learned lake science.
