Lock Haven University senior wears many hats for internship

LOCK HAVEN – Lock Haven University senior, Jane Spitnale, originally had a passion only for advertising. Once given the chance to expand her skill set and explore other areas, Spitnale came away from her internship with an entirely different view.

Spitnale’s original hope was to intern at a large-scale advertising agency, but after applying to countless agencies in New York with no response, she stepped out of her comfort zone and applied for the internship with Contemporary Media Group (CMG) in Sparta, New Jersey.

CMG is a startup company with only two employees and one additional intern, and where Spitnale spent three months of her summer as a project coordinator.

Her roles included those of social media content creator and manager, public relations writer, graphic designer, copywriter and event planner.

Provided with these opportunities, Spitnale feels she was extremely lucky to experience all aspects of public relations, unlike her friends who received internships in larger advertising agencies.

“I was lucky enough to be considered a full member of the CMG team. We knew we were small, we felt a bit like underdogs, but we were extremely confident in the level of professional work we produced,” Spitnale said.

One role that was a highlight for Spitnale was that of event manager for the New Jersey State Fair’s first media day event.

The event was a huge success and received coverage on the front page of the New Jersey Herald, an amazing accomplishment in the public relations world.

Spitnale will be graduating from the communication department at Lock Haven University this fall with a bachelor’s degree in advertising and public relations. When asked about her internship, Spitnale replied, “I was so grateful I had an opportunity to showcase my skills-a chance to help a real company in their marketing efforts.”

Before completing her internship, Spitnale was asked by her supervisor, Doreen, the creative director at CMG, for her feedback on the company’s new website design. Upon peering at the screen she scrolled through an updated and impressive page, stopping at the “Our Team” section where four empty boxes were placed.

“I’m going to need your headshot,” Doreen said. Spitnale was then given the opportunity at the end of the summer to expand her internship into a telecommuting position during her final semester at Lock Haven University.
