P. D. Mitchell annual award banquet set for November

The Board of Directors of the Campbell Street Family, Youth and Community Association Inc., better known as The Center, will host the annual P. D. Mitchell Awards Banquet on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Genetti Hotel, 200 W. Fourth St. A reception and social hour will begin at 5 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6 p.m.

The banquet will honor the 2016 recipients of the P. D. Mitchell Memorial Award, Kaliyah Moore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Moore and Frank Rose Jr., son of Frank Rose Sr. and Britt Banks.

Kaliyah is attending Wilkes University, Wilkes Barre, pursuing a degree in nursing. Frank is attending the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York, pursuing a degree in nuclear engineering and nuclear physics.

The Center established the P. D. Mitchell Memorial Award Fund with the WASD Education Foundation who manage and distributes the funds. The P.D. Mitchell Memorial Award is given annually to two high school seniors for their academic and scholastic achievements and who show promise of success in their pursuit of higher education.

Others to receive awards and recognition for service, leadership and sportsmanship within the community over the years include, Mrs. J. Marlyne Whaley who will receive The P. D. Mitchell Achievement Award; Rick Armstead who will receive the P. D. Mitchell Service Award; Peter White, Sr. who will receive the P. D. Mitchell Sports Award and Valarie Taylor who will receive the Alyce D. Woody Award. Lee Fisher, retired educator and coach, Oneonta, New York, and former resident of Williamsport, will be the keynote speaker.

The Center is composed of a Board of Directors, dedicated to preserve the memory of P.D. Mitchell and his legacy by providing financial assistance, awards and recognitions in his memory. There is a fee for tickets.
