LHU music professor plays in orchestra led by Grammy-winning composer

LOCK HAVEN — LHU Music Professor, Dr. Eddie Severn, recently played lead trumpet in a jazz orchestra directed by two-time Grammy award winning composer, Maria Schneider. The project included several schools and college workshops, open rehearsals, and a concert of her music at Moravian College in Pennsylvania on Nov. 17. Severn and Schneider teamed up once before when the award-winning composer visited Scotland in the late 90’s and toured for a week with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra.

According to her website, “Schneider and her orchestra have a distinguished recording career with 12 Grammy nominations and five Grammy awards. Her music blurs the lines between genres, making her long list of commissioners quite varied, stretching from Jazz at Lincoln Center, to The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, to collaborating with David Bowie.”

Severn holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Salford, Manchester England. His numerous performance and recording credits include both Europe and the USA. He performs regularly with the Phil Woods Big band, Dave Liebman Big Band, The Temptations and the Four Tops. Severn’s clinics and presentations include the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference, International Trumpet Guild and National Trumpet Competition.

Severn said of their recent collaboration, “Performing with Maria in the late 90’s was a highlight in my performing career.  She is without doubt one of the world’s leading composers and a unique voice both in the world of jazz and contemporary music.  To have been able to perform with her again this year was a privilege and an unforgettable experience.”
