Secondary curriculum supervisor begins at WASD

Bernadette Boerckel has joined the curriculum leadership team as the secondary curriculum supervisor at the Williamsport Area School District.

Boerckel comes to the district from the Warrior Run School District, where she most recently served as its director of curriculum and instruction.

“We are thrilled to welcome Bernadette,” said Superintendent Dr. Timothy S. Bowers. “We believe her knowledge and experience will greatly enhance our curriculum and instructional practices throughout the district.”

Boerckel joins the curriculum leadership team of Assistant Superintendent Pete Chapla; Federal Programs Director Dr. Susan Bigger; and K-6 Curriculum Supervisor John Killian.

She brings more than a decade of classroom and administrative experience with her. She began her career in education in 2002 as an English teacher at Warrior Run High School before taking on her most recent role in 2009.

“I began teaching at the Williamsport Area High School 17 years ago as a student teacher, and I am honored and excited to return to the district,” Boerckel said. “I am hopeful that my experiences as a teacher, an administrator, an advocate for public education, a supporter of the arts, and a parent will allow me to meaningfully contribute to the many excellent things happening in Williamsport. I look forward to building new relationships and joining a great team of educators.”

Boerckel is a member of a number of boards and organizations, including serving as the central regional vice president of the Pennsylvania Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (PASCD). She was formerly contracted with the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit for professional development and online content creation. Her work in education has earned her recognitions, such as the 2015 Dellicker Strategies Rock Star Award for Effective Implementation of Hybrid Learning as well as the 2014 Learning Forward’s Best Practices in Professional Development Award.

In addition to her roles in education, she worked as the administrative assistant to the vice president of Music Theatre International in New York City, and her passion for the arts continues.

She serves as the soprano soloist for the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra; performs solo recitals in the tristate area, including live for WVIA; with local college and university faculty; and with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra.

She earned the 2012 Perry County Council of the Arts Educator of the Year Award.

A native of Manasquan, New Jersey, Boerckel earned a Master of Science in Education from Wilkes University and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Lycoming College. Her administrative supervisory certification was awarded through Bucknell University. She is completing her doctoral studies through Immaculata University with a concentration in educational leadership.
