VFW names 2017 spring scholarship recipients

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Veterans of Foreign Wars has announced the selection of 135 student veterans as VFW’s “Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship” recipients for the 2017 spring semester. The program, in its fourth year, will distribute more than $600,000 in scholarships to help student veterans in college or trade school.

Garth Reish, of Millheim, a student at Pennsylvania College Of Technology, is among the recipients.

Enacted in 2014, the Help A Hero scholarship program was created in conjunction with Sport Clips to help ease the burden of student loans for America’s service members and veterans. Each semester, service members and veterans can apply for scholarships of up to $5,000.

To date, more than $3 million in Help A Hero scholarships have been awarded to 718 service members and veterans.

Applications for the 2017 fall semester will be accepted until April 30.
