MANSFIELD — Twelve individuals who have served on the board of the Mansfield Auxiliary Corporation (MAC) have been awarded the Mansfield University Presidential Coin for Excellence by President Fran Hendricks.

MAC President Dave Cummings, Vice President Al Quimby, Treasurer Brian Barden, Secretary Chuck Colby and board members, past and present, Deb Bastian, Mark Eby, Jess Ricker, Randy Black, Bob McConnell, Jackie Lundgren, Bruce Dart and Fred Lavancher were honored at the Mansfield University Council of Trustees meeting on July 19.

Cummings, Quimby, Barden, Colby, Bastian and Eby were able to attend the meeting. Ricker, Black, McConnell, Lundgren, Dart and Lavancher will receive their coins at a future date.

“When our school was in need of new residence halls, this group of individuals from our community stood up and sought out the funds needed to build them and operated them until last fall, when the State System took ownership,” Hendricks said. “Their willingness to come together to help MU at a critical time, and the long hours they sacrificed to oversee this project, makes them all worthy of this honor.”

The MAC Board also established a Housing Incentive Fund, donating more than $700,000 back to the university to benefit current students and help attract new students to MU.

MAC was formed in 2009 as a Pennsylvania Nonprofit, IRS 501(c)(3) charitable corporation consisting of volunteers from the community to assist MU in the construction of replacement student housing on the MU Campus.

Its stated mission was to “promote the interests of Mansfield University … by engaging in the construction, operation, management and maintenance of student housing facilities or other projects for the benefit of the students of the University.”

Under the MAC Board’s leadership and guidance, Oak and Hickory Halls opened in January 2012. Sycamore Hall opened in September 2013 and Spruce Hall opened in January 2014.

The coin was developed by Hendricks and designed by MU Senior Graphics Designer Andy Worthington.

It is awarded selectively to persons who have distinguished themselves and the University through their accomplishments, using the Mansfield Creed; Character, Scholarship, Culture and Service as a guideline.

The coin bears several symbols representing historical highlights and other aspects of the university that make it distinctive.
