In September, the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met at the Towanda Country Club to initiate six new members. The initiates included Amy Brown, seventh grade math teacher, Towanda Area School District; Jennifer Wettlaufer, third grade teacher, Sullivan County School District; Elizabeth Ward, 10th grade English teacher, Troy School District; Christine Woodward, first grade teacher, Troy School District; Sheila Jackson, elementary/special education teacher, Canton School District; and Sherry Stiner, Title 1 math teacher, Canton School District.

Shirley Allis, president, called the business meeting to order and welcomed the members and initiates. The Alpha Zeta Singers, under the direction of Olynda Smith and led by the night’s song leader, Theresa Sparrow, entertained the membership with two songs, and Marianne Hennip provided the inspirational “Thought for the Day.” In addition to several reports from various committee chairpersons, secretary Barbara Pulver reviewed the minutes from the last meeting, treasurer Mary Herman gave the treasurer’s report and Claire Waldmeyer presented the budget for the year.

Several members received special recognition in the form of a red rose, the society’s symbol for recent achievements. Marianne Hennip was recognized as a recent retiree and Sally Hickey and Lee Ann Carmichael were recognized for their 25 years of membership. Other members receiving pins and recognition for their years of membership were Maureen Downs and Joyce VanDusen for 40 years, Olynda Smith for 45 years and Joan Moody, a 57 year member.

The evening concluded with the initiation of new members. Pat Stadelmaier, co-chairman of the initiation committee, conducted the ceremony. The culmination of the night’s program was the traditional singing of The Delta Kappa Gamma song.

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is a professional honorary society of women educators.
