LHU health and physical education students earn top honors at state convention
LOCK HAVEN — Lock Haven University again can boast having two seniors receiving top honors at the recent Pennsylvania State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance state convention, held Nov. 16-18 at the Valley Forge Casino Resort, King of Prussia.
LHU student winners were Amanda Fuschetti, Outstanding Future Professional Award, and Justin Rowand, Violet Baumgardner Memorial Scholarship Award.
The Pennsylvania State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (PSAHPERD) offers each professional preparation institution in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania an opportunity to select one student, currently enrolled in his or her final year of undergraduate education to receive an Outstanding Future Professional Award from the association. Award recipients must be members of PSAHPERD and enrolled in any of the sub disciplines of health, physical education, recreation or dance.
Fuschetti, representing LHU, competed against other students from colleges and universities across the state. Student representatives submitted written accounts of their qualifications and participated in interviews during the convention. As the winner of the Outstanding Future Professional Award, Fuschetti will represent PSAHPERD at the Eastern District Convention to be held in conjunction with SHAPE America’s convention in Burlington, Vermont, from January 28-30, 2018.
“I am honored to have received this award as a representative of Lock Haven, as I feel that it is a reflection of the quality of the health and physical education program that has prepared me to be successful,” Fuschetti said. “My education at LHU has provided me with so many opportunities to become a better teacher, and the faculty and staff of our department have been supportive and encouraging throughout my time here. Because of my experiences, I feel prepared to be able to truly make a difference as a health and physical education teacher, which is something I could not be more excited to do.”
Student Justin Rowand was one of three recipients of the Violet Baumgardner Scholarship Award. Each year, PSAHPERD typically offers scholarships of $300, $500 and $700 to junior and senior student members in health, physical education, recreation and-or dance professional preparation programs who best qualify based on applicant responses to financial need, academic record, professional service and potential, contributions to the department/college/university, and contributions to the community and-or community service. Following review of students’ written accounts and final interviews, the committee selected Rowand as the recipient of a scholarship in the amount of $1,000. This year, all three award recipients received the increased amount of $1,000.
“I am truly blessed to have been honored with winning the Violet Baumgardner Memorial Scholarship,” Rowand said. “Overall, the phenomenal Lock Haven health and physical education program and fantastic professors have prepared me to be the best possible educator that I can be.”
“I am not surprised by the success of Amanda and Justin,” said Dr. Paul Ballat, chair of the Department of Health and Physical Education. “Our HPE teacher education majors have consistently ranked among the best in the state. We (at LHU) are proud of our students’ success, and we will continue to support their efforts to attain the highest standards of excellence.”
