Career Cafe: River Valley Regional YMCA director speaks to Stevens students

Darnell Hayes, branch executive director of the River Valley Regional YMCA, stopped by Stevens Primary School recently, visiting the school as December’s Career Cafe guest speaker.

Hayes, a 2003 WAHS alumnus and board member, spoke with second- and third-grade students about his career and the educational path leading to that career.

Now in its second year, the Career Cafe program is an opportunity for a rotating group students to hear from area professionals while they eat their lunch in library. The program, led by school counselor Marcey Nolan, helps expose students to a number of career fields, while offering them a chance to ask questions to deepen their understanding of a particular profession.

“We want them to be able to begin to think about who they are, what they like and what they’re good at, and hear from a variety of career stories from people in our community,” Nolan said.
