LHU alumna receives NATA Preceptor of the Year award

LOCK HAVEN — Lock Haven University alumna, Andrea Lucas, was chosen as the recipient of the inaugural Preceptor of the Year award from the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA). She received the award at the 68th NATA Clinical Symposia and Athletic Training Expo in Houston, Texas, earlier this year.

The NATA Preceptor Award was created to recognize those who have served as preceptors for an athletic training program and who also go above and beyond to help mentor students in the profession.

Lucas received a bachelor’s degree in health science from LHU in 2000, a master’s degree in exercise science from Bloomsburg University in 2002 and has been the head athletic trainer at Lycoming College in Williamsport since 2008.

“If it weren’t for LHU, I would not be where I am today,” Lucas said. “The educational experience at LHU is comprehensive and allowed me to develop my skills and knowledge hands on, as well as in the classroom. My professors truly cared for me as a student and a person. They pushed us, encouraged us, and were always there for us.”

Lucas was employed part-time by LHU during the 2002-03 school year, teaching CPR for the professional rescuer, and care and prevention of athletic injuries. She also covered men and women’s basketball and mentored student athletic trainers.

“When I worked there (LHU), even though I was young and fresh out of school, I was treated as a professional. The professors gave me the confidence I needed to move to the next level in my career,” she said.

Lucas said she is thankful for the support from both the Lycoming and LHU communities, as well as her co-workers, to help her continue to work with the students.

“I love working with students and I try to pass my passion for working with athletes on to them,” she said. “I hope I am able to make a positive impression on their lives.”
