FCFP announces four scholarships for non-traditional students

First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania recently announced four special interest scholarship award opportunities for non-traditional students in Lycoming and surrounding counties.

• The Joseph R. Calder Jr., MD Scholarship Fund is in memory of Calder who was dedicated to the medical profession for over 30 years in Williamsport. This award supports the education of current and aspiring Lycoming County medical professionals planning or are currently enrolled in a medical-related program studying medicine, nursing, pharmacy, allied health and more. Preference is given to students returning to develop new skills or knowledge, or a first-time student, not necessarily a recent high-school graduate.

• The Morton and Beatrice Harrison Scholarship Fund honors Mort Harrison, founder of Lycoming County Friends’ of the Court, who believed in troubled youth and young adults, given direction and support, to gain control of their futures and to succeed. Scholarships available to young adults who have come to the Lycoming County’s Probation Department as a result of legal offenses as juveniles or young adults. Young adults are identified by the Lycoming County Reentry Service Center, Lycoming County Children & Youth Services Agency and clients of the Nurse Family Partnership. Young adults graduating from a Lycoming County High School identified with at-risk behavior in their district grades 6-12 may be considered.

• The Taylor J. Ertel Scholarship Fund for Foster Children, created in ’93 by Allen and Catharine Ertel in memory of their adopted son, Taylor J. Ertel, assists Pennsylvania residents placed in foster care by a child welfare agency during their lives and are enrolled in a program of study that ranges from short vocational courses through college and graduate degrees. Scholarships awarded on a first-come first-served basis during the year until the available dollars have been awarded. Submissions accepted any time.

• The Warren E. “Whitey” Cole A.S.H.E. Scholarship Fund was created to provide financial assistance to students enrolled in Civil Engineering or Civil Technology and have completed sophomore year of a 4-year program or freshman year of a two year program. Preference given to students at Pennsylvania College of Technology, Pennsylvania State University or Bucknell University. Students residing in Bradford, Columbia, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga or Union or are attending another institution may apply.

Scholarships awarded may be based on pre-determined criteria reflective of the personal values and interests of those who established the funds.
