Troy High School students compete in Pennsylvania Economics Challenge

Twenty-four Troy High School students, in teams of three to four, competed in the David Ricardo division — which includes students who have taken any one semester, introductory or general, combined macro and micro economics course — of the Pennsylvania Economics Challenge.

Hundreds of high school students across Pennsylvania competed in the spring 2018 EconChallenge, which consisted of a 30 question online rapid fire exam consisting of macro, micro, and international questions. Each student was given 35 minutes to complete the exam with the sum of the top three individual scores making up the team score. Scoring on individual tests included 10 points for correct answers and 0 points for incorrect or unanswered questions.

The top team from the Adam Smith and David Ricardo divisions will advance to The National Economics Challenge Semi-Finals. The semi-finals are online April 24 and the top four teams in each division nationally, will be invited to the EconChallenge Finals in NYC. Next year, the top 10 teams from each division of the spring EconChallenge in Pennsylvania, will be invited to Susquehanna University to complete in a Quiz Bowl for a place in the National Semi-final.

Out of 60 teams in their division, Troy’s “Top Shelf” team finished in ninth place with a team score of 630, earning the highest team score at Troy High School. Team members included Breana Millard, Josh Nowacoski, Braden Ward and Jared Wiker. The spring 2018 EconChallenge was offered as an extension of the Honors/Dual-Enrollment Economics elective course, taught by Jenn Sporer.
