Local students named winners in Bloomsburg University’s Young Classical Artists’ competition

French Hornist Taylor Wentzel and Violinist Michael Fisher, both of Williamsport, have been selected as winners in the Senior Division of Bloomsburg University’s 2018 Young Classical Artists’ Competition and Violinist Diana McLean and Violinist Marlowe Jacques, both of Williamsport, have been selected as winners in the Junior Division.

Wentzel, Fisher, McLean and Jacques were honored and presented in a winners’ recital in their respected divisions among other students on May 5 in the historic Gross Auditorium at Bloomsburg University. The Senior Division winners had their recital again on May 6 in Sordoni Hall at the WVIA-FM studios in West Pittston recorded for later broadcast to the region in late summer or early fall.

Wentzel, Melvin Wentzel’s daughter, is an 11th grader at Loyalsock Township High School and studies privately with Donna Elkin. Fisher, a ninth grade student at Williamsport Area High School studies privately with James Lyon at Penn State University.

McLean, the daughter of Wooyoung and Christine McLean, is an eighth grader at Williamsport Area Middle School and studies privately with Emily Rolka and is the principal second violinist for the Williamsport Symphony Youth Orchestra. McLean also was recognized as a finalist for the 44th annual WSO Young Artist Competition.

Jacques, the son of Dana and Robert Jacques, is an 8th grade student at the Williamsport Area Middle School and studies privately with Kenneth Sarch.

The four winners played live for a panel of adjudicators on Feb. 3. Wentzel performed the Franz Starauss “Nocturne” and played the same selections at the winners’ recital. Fisher performed the opening movement of Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto in E-Minor.” McLean performed “Accolay’s concerto No. 1 in A-Minor” and also played it at the winner’s recital. Jacques performed “Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto in E-Minor.”

All four were accompanied by Rob Stabinsky, Bloomsburg University’s accompanist.

The annual competition is hosted by Bloomsburg University’s Student Chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).
