Williamsport Area High School senior McKenzie DeShong earned first place in Pin Design at the SkillsUSA state competition in Hershey recently.

DeShong is a student in Tim Miller’s advertising art class. To earn her first-place ranking DeShong had to “explain the design process in its etirety, including … (the) thumbnail process, color scheme(s) chosen, what research the student may have conducted ahead of time, how the design represents the state of Pennsylvania, and the pin’s potential appeal to members,” according to contest information.

Competitors also were judged on their ability to present their design in a confident and professional manner.

Advertising art is one of the 15 workforce development courses made available to WAHS students through the high school’s Career and Technical Education program.
