WAHS student organizes recital to pursue summer learning opportunity

Some students look forward to getting away from study and learning for the summer months, but violist Megan Wike is excited to have received a “large merit-based scholarship” to attend the prestigious Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival’s four-week summer program on the campus of the University of Vermont. The WAHS junior looks forward to working with Lila Brown of the Boston Conservatory at Berklee Studio, but first she will need to earn funds to pay tuition costs over and above the scholarship award.

While Wike also was accepted into a different summer program, she was pleased to accept the Green Mountain offer as her first choice. The application process included submitting audition tapes of her musical artistry on the viola.

Wike first began studying viola with instrumental teacher Matthew Radspinner as a third-grader at Sheridan Elementary School. She is grateful for “people supporting me” along the way and praised both the school district music program and her teachers. “Mr. Rad,” as she calls him, “helped me out with the audition recording” that landed her the invitation and scholarship to Green Mountain. She has also perfected her musical craft in programs at Bucknell University.

To earn the money needed to take advantage of the Green Mountain opportunity, Wike got together with three of her fellow string musician friends and organized a recital to be held at the Lycoming College Honors Hall at 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

Wike will be joined on stage by double bassist Ben Byham, violinist Emily Tupper, and cellist Rachel Boll. Byham will solo on the double bass, while the ladies will form a trio and also offer solo pieces.

Donations will be accepted at the door.
