Three Lycoming College students began their summers with an internship at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. as a part of a institutional partnership. Katie de Melo ’19, of Tiverton, Rhode Island.; Jazmin Jones ’20, of Gloversville, New York; and Xiyue Yang ’20, of Beijing, China, each lived in Washington D.C. and interned in various Smithsonian offices and museums.

The internships were a new program though the College’s Center for Enhanced Academic Experiences (CEAE), giving Lycoming students the opportunity to participate in an internship experience at a Smithsonian facility for four weeks. De Melo, Jones and Yang worked on individual research projects, assisted with museum events and publications and worked with mentors to achieve desired learning goals.

Jones interned with the National Museum of Natural History and researched shark-bitten bones from the Miocene and Pliocene times nearly 23 million years ago focusing on whether prey increased their body size over time to avoid predation. Jones read professional articles and catalogued over 100 shark-bitten bones.

De Melo worked at the Smithsonian Office of Fellowships and Internships (OFI). By studying the history of the Smithsonian fellowship program she sharpened her research skills. Her work was published on the OFI website and planned intern activities, published blogs, created newsletters and drafted emails.

Yang worked with the Digitization Program office and used her commercial design major to restyle the two main office websites and created an accessible interface that met museum expectations.
