Fall course for those seeking employment as phlebotomist
A Clinical Phlebotomy course will be offered this fall in the Klump Academic Center on Pennsylvania College of Technology’s man campus.
The program is 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 18 to Oct. 23 and provides instruction how to collect blood samples using venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures.
It also includes how to properly and safely use needles, lancets and butterflies to collect samples and different types of collection tubes for the appropriate tests. Basic specimen preparation, patient interactions and confidentiality issues also are addressed.
The course combines classroom (about 40 hours of instruction) and a 40-hour externship that provides live blood-draw experience prior to sitting for certification.
The objective is to prepare students for employment as an entry-level phlebotomist. Those successfully completing the course are issued a certificate and are eligible to sit for certification exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association.
