LHU professor participates in analysis to identify changes in roles of health education professionals

LOCK HAVEN — Dr. Kathleen Allison, MPH, MCHES, professor of community and public health education in the Lock Haven University Department of Health Science, is a member of the Health Education Specialist Practice Analysis II (HESPA II) steering committee.

The HESPA II is a 12-15 month, profession-wide study designed to verify the areas of responsibility, competencies and sub-competencies of practicing health education specialists. In accordance with best practices in certification, the practice analysis study is conducted every five years.

“The practice analysis allows us to validate the knowledge and skills required of health education specialists in their professional duties. The study’s results provide a framework for professional preparation curricula, continuing education, and credentialing of health education specialists,” Allison said.

Allison is serving on the six-member committee under the leadership of Dr. Randy Cottrell, professor and program coordinator of the public health studies program at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington; Dr. Adam Knowlden, assistant professor of health science at The University of Alabama; Dr. James F. McKenzie, co-chair of the HESPA 2015 project; and Elaine Auld, MPH, MCHES and Linda Lysoby, MS, MCHES, CAE, both chief staff executives of Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) and National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC).

Allison was invited to participate on the steering committee based on her roles as coordinator of NCHEC’s Division Board for Certification of Health Education Specialists and as a SOPHE trustee board member.
