Discussion sustainable energy policy in state

Lycoming College’s Center for Energy and the Future welcomes environmental advocate and professional Robert Altenburg at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Jane Schultz Room, located in Wertz Student Center as a part of a speaker series. His lecture, entitled “Achieving a Clean and Sustainable Energy Economy in Pennsylvania,” will encompass the actions that need to be taken to reach climate goals. He will also discuss proposals that have recently been implemented or are being considered in the state capitol.

As energy director of PennFuture, a statewide environmental advocacy group, Altenburg brings a rich understanding of energy and environmental expertise to the table. In his current role, he analyzes and provides expert comments and testimony on legislation and regulations.

He also works with regulatory agencies and clean energy industry experts on climate and energy issues and provides technical assistance and research on methane and fossil fuel impacts. Altenburg also recently served as project coordinator for Pennsylvania’s Solar Future Plan, a planning process to determine what solar energy in Pennsylvania can look like in 2030 if strategies are developed and implemented to increase this renewable energy source.

Altenburg spent nearly 22 years with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection while obtaining a degree from Widener Commonwealth Law School. After spending his days measuring and analyzing air quality in the Lehigh Valley region, his evenings consisted of working toward certificates in both environmental law and administrative/constitutional law, which allow him to practice law in the state of Pennsylvania.
