LHU holds opening for new Veterans’ Center on campus

LOCK HAVEN — Lock Haven University held a ribbon cutting ceremony to announce the opening of the new Veterans’ Center in Zimmerli G1A on campus. The center offers student veterans a place to relax — with a couch, smart TV, Keurig, microwave and refrigerator for their use. There also are two computers with Common Access Card (CAC) readers that allow the student to scan their military ID and have access to certain military websites.

“Our military population on campus is a very tight knit group and a lot of them are non-traditional students,” said Liza Kopp, school certifying official for military students at Lock Haven University. “The Veterans’ Center allows them to have a place to connect with other military students and have a sense of home on the campus. Our Student Veteran Alliance (SVA) hosts events throughout the year and it will be nice to have a familiar spot to direct participants to.” Kopp also serves as the SVA club advisor.

The idea of a Veterans’ Center on campus started several years ago, but gained momentum after president Robert Pignatello brought the idea to the Veterans Committee last year, according to Kopp.

Right before Christmas, 2018, Kopp was notified of available space in Zimmerli and she and Gwen Bechdel, executive assistant to the president, began to put ideas into action.

The university’s Veterans Committee includes: Kopp, Tyana Lange, Stacey Horner, Meisha McDermit, Jodi Smith, Kristin Vincenzes, Bill Bechdel, Jennifer Hagaman, Mike Hall, Chrissy Wise, Tracy Houser-Myers, Jonathon Britton, Susan Birdsey, David Tice and Angela Walter, LHU student and SVA president.

According to Kopp, the university plans to hire VA work-study students who will be able to have the Veterans’ Center open seven days a week. Center hours will be announced when they are finalized and will be open to veteran students as well as community members.

Any veteran who would like access to the new Veterans’ Center can contact Liza Kopp at 570-484-2424 or email lkopp@lockhaven.edu.
