3 local nurses receive DAISY awards
Three Susquehanna Health nurses – Kaitlyn Fowler, Amy Lekites and Brenda Clegg – recently were recognized as recipients of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
Fowler, a nurse with Susquehanna Health’s Birthplace, was selected after being nominated by a patient. “Kaitlyn was my labor and delivery nurse when I was giving birth to my daughter,” the patient said. “She was very caring and was always there if I needed anything and she tried to keep me as comfortable as possible throughout the whole delivery. Our daughter was born with a birth defect that we were not previously aware of. Kaitlyn was compassionate, empathetic and she helped us through everything. She constantly provided a smile and assurance that no matter what our daughter was beautiful.”
Lekites, a nurse with Muncy Valley Hospital’s Medical/Surgical Unit, was nominated by a patient’s family. “My mother suffered from a devastating hip fracture and was forced to have surgery and a stay at Muncy Valley Hospital,” said the family member. “The whole ordeal was made a little brighter and easier on all of us because of Amy. She went out of her way to tend to my mother and even was able to convince my mother to eat when she refused to do so for anyone else. I felt as though Amy really listened to the family and my mother. Even though we know my mother was not her only patient, it really felt as if she was while she was in Amy’s care.”
Clegg, a nurse with Divine Providence Hospital’s Same Day Surgery, was nominated by a fellow nurse Rhonda Boyce. “Brenda is very caring with our patients,” Boyce said. “She is responsive to their needs and does so in a very compassionate manner. We work in a very fast-paced unit, and she is able to provide exceptional care in a very efficient way. She is a great team player and is full of spirit and enthusiasm for her work. I refer to her as ‘the quiet one’ because she works with such pride and always provides service with a smile. She never complains and is willing to always do whatever is necessary and best for patients.”
A nurse from each Lycoming County Susquehanna Health campus is selected each quarter. Anyone may nominate a nurse for a DAISY award – a coworker, patient, patient’s family or physician. Nomination forms are available at nursing stations and at SusquehannaHealth.org/DAISY.
DAISY Awards are presented in more than 900 hospitals, both nationwide and internationally. Supported by both AONE and The American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program, the DAISY award program is part of the not-for-profit DAISY Foundation based in Glen Ellen, Calif. All winners will be highlighted on the DAISY Foundation’s website.
