Mental health expert to speak

BLOOMSBURG –One in four Americans will suffer from major depression during his or her lifetime.

Every two hours and seven minutes, a person between the ages of 15 and 24 dies by suicide in the United States.

Stephen S. Ilardi, an expert on depression, will talk about the effects the 21st century lifestyle has on our bodies at Bloomsburg University’s 23rd annual Health Sciences Symposium and Wellness Fair.

Ilardi will deliver the keynote speech, “We Were Never Designed for This: The Psychological Toxicity of Modern Life (And What We Can Do about It),” at 6:30 p.m. April 24 in the Carver Hall Kenneth S. Gross Auditorium.

At 9 p.m. on April 25, Ilardi will lead a discussion on “Depression is a Disease of Civilization” in the Kehr Union Ballroom.

In the keynote speech, Ilardi will talk about how people’s bodies are not equipped for the sleep-deprived, poorly nourished, frenzied pace of modern life.

He has authored more than 40 professional articles on mental illness and the book, “The Depression Cure: The 6-Step Program to Beat Depression without Drugs.”

An associate professor of clinical psychology at the University of Kansas, Ilardi was recently awarded the school’s highest instructional honor, the HOPE award for teaching excellence.

Through his active clinical practice, Ilardi has treated hundreds of patients suffering from depression.

During the Wellness Fair on April 25 in BU’s Multipurpose Rooms, representatives of more than 40 local organizations will present health information and health products from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Participants include the Geisinger-Bloomsburg Hospital and its emergency room and BU’s DAWN (Drug Alcohol Wellness Network) office.

The Health Sciences Symposium and Wellness Fair is sponsored by the Berwick Health and Wellness Foundation, the Provost’s Lecture Series and the Science and Health Sciences Living and Learning Community.

Both the keynote speech and discussion are free and open to the public.
