Vision rehabilitation therapists help vision impared stay independent
In my last column, I focused on the Prevent Blindness America advocacy program for Medicare coverage of low vision devices.
These devices are an important part of maintaining independence after experiencing vision loss.
But another variable in the equation is something not often publicized but equally important – vision rehabilitation therapy.
A certified vision rehabilitation therapist, also referred to as a CVRT, is a trained professional who teaches independent living skills to adults with vision loss.
In addition to helping people find the right tools such as magnifiers and assistive technology, the CVRT also provides valuable insight on modifications to your home and/or workplace to overcome the daily challenges associated with vision loss.
Each individual has a unique need based on the degree and cause of his or her vision loss. After all, we all can see things differently.
A CRVT examines factors such as lighting, color, contrast, and placement of daily objects.
A complete vision rehabilitation assessment includes home management, vocational development, communication methods, personal care, and social interaction.
Due to the growing number of adults with vision loss in our region, North Central Sight Services, Inc. offers a certified vision rehabilitation therapist to those in need.
Lori Love has a master’s degree from Salus University (formerly Pennsylvania College of Optometry) and has been certified by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals.
