UPMC Susquehanna’s Heartworks program offers family-based peer support groups for preschool, elementary, middle school and high school aged children and their parents/caregivers that helps families explore their feelings in a safe environment. The LifeCenter is closed for the holiday

UPMC Susquehanna’s The LifeCenter in the Williamsport YMCA will be closed in observance of the holiday on Dec. 26 to allow staff and volunteers time to spend with their families. The office will open on Dec. 27 during regular business hours.

Safe Sitter program for teens

Safe Sitter Essentials, a comprehensive babysitting training program that teaches life and safety skills to teens in grades six to eight at The LifeCenter in the Williamsport YMCA. There is a fee for Safe Sitter Essentials and includes The Official Safe Sitter Babysitter’s Handbook. Seating is very limited. Payment and forms were required in advance before registration is complete and seat reserved.

Family and Friends CPR anytime class

An American Heart Association CPR Anytime program presented by the Pennsylvania Department of Health at The LifeCenter in the Williamsport YMCA. The hands-on program includes a free training kit with mini Annie doll, booklet and DVD to share with family and friends. Seating is limited. To register, call 1-877-883-4791.

Community blood drive

Celebrate local first responders and keep the local blood supply strong with the Community Blood Bank’s “Holiday Heroes” drive. All are welcome to donate as long as it has been 56 days since last donation, and you are healthy, over 110 pounds and at least 17 years of age. Appointments are not necessary, but can be made if preferred.

Coping with cancer

Solders & Sailors infant CPR program

WELLSBORO —  Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital announced in a news release that it is launching a new, free infant and child CPR course designed for everyone.

Classes will be offered on the fourth Thursday of each month. Registration is required.

LEWISBURG — Protect yourself and your new baby with tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccines available at no charge to fathers and other family household members (18 and older) of a newborn delivered at Evangelical Community Hospital. LEWISBURG — Evangelical Community Hospital will hold a series of classes. They are as follows:

Prepared childbirth classes:

• Prenatal breastfeeding: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Dec. 21 at the Community Health and Wellness Center. Fee per couple. This class is for the expectant mother and one support person. The course covers the advantages of breastfeeding and the common concerns associated with it.

Prepared childbirth refresher class:

• Dates are not pre-determined; call the Community Health and Wellness Center at 570-786-3200 to schedule your class. Registration fee.

Prepared childbirth class:

• 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 7 at the Community Health and Wellness Center. Fee per couple. This course guides parents and support persons through childbirth, including labor, delivery, breathing, and relaxation.

Hello Baby class:

• For siblings ages 2-10: 6:15-7:45 p.m. Jan. 9, at Apple AB Conference Room, on the lower level of Evangelical Community Hospital. Cost per family. The class teaches brothers and sisters how to diaper, swaddle, and hold a baby.

Prenatal breastfeeding:

• 6:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Community Health and Wellness Center. Fee per couple. The class is for the expectant mother and one support person. The course covers the advantages of breastfeeding and the common concerns associated with it.

Newborn care:

• 7-9 p.m. Jan. 23 and 30, at the Community Health and Wellness Center. $30 per couple. This class is designed to teach caregivers how to diaper, bathe, and feed their baby. This class also covers post-partum depression and care of the new mother.

CPR classes:

•Heartsaver Adult/Child/Infant CPR & AED: 6 p.m. Jan. 4, at the Community Health and Wellness Center. Registration fee.

• HeartCode BLS Skills Check Class: 8:30 a.m. Jan. 6, or 12:30 p.m. Jan. 26, at the Community Health and Wellness Center. Structured Basic Life Support (BLS) hands-on session is for health care professionals seeking an alternative method for completing an initial or renewal course and have completed the online portion through the American Heart Association website. Fee and registration are required; call 570-768-3200 or register online.

• Heartsaver First Aid, CPR, and AED Skills Check Class: 12:30 p.m .Jan. 6, or 8:30 a.m. Jan. 26, at the Community Health and Wellness Center. Intended for anyone with little to no medical training in need of a course completion card. Participants must complete the online portion through the AHA website before taking this class. Fee and registration required; call 570-768-3200 or register online.

•    Healthcare Provider CPR Class: 8:30 a.m. Jan. 10, at the Community Health and Wellness Center. The American Heart Association course is for the health care provider in and out of hospital settings in need of CPR certification. Registration fee.

Other classes:

• Safe Sitters: 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 28, at the Community Health and Wellness Center. There is a fee and registration required. Scholarships available.

• New Year, New You: noon Jan. 4, at the Community Health and Wellness Center. Registered dietician Christina O’Rourke will discuss tips to set yourself up for success if your New Year’s resolution includes a healthier lifestyle.

• Staying Strong: 10:15-11:15 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 9-Feb. 15, at the Community Health and Wellness Center. For women of all ages. The program focuses on improving bone density, muscle strength, flexibility and balance. Equipment provided. Fee for the six-week session.

• AARP Smart Driver Refresher Course: 12:30-4:30 p.m. Jan. 11, the Community Health and Wellness Center. A four-hour driver safety course for those who have previously attended the eight-hour course. Fees for AARP members and non-AARP members. Registration is required; call 570-768-3200.

• Why Weight: 6-7:15 p.m. Wednesdays Jan. 11-Feb. 15, , at the Community Health and Wellness Center. A six-week weight management program led by a certified health coach and registered dietitian. There is a fee for the six-week session.

• Live Your Best Life: 9:3- a.m.-noon Tuesdays, Jan. 17-Feb. 21. Learn how to manage conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, chronic pain, depression, COPD, heart failure, or any health problem that alters your lifestyle. Topics to be covered include nutrition, exercise, medications, communicating with your doctor, pain, fatigue, and action planning. Free.

• Diabetes Education Program: 3-4 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Community Health and Wellness Center. This month’s topic: Understanding Your Diabetes Medication. Registration required, call 570-768-3138.

• AARP Smart Driver: 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Jan. 19 and Jan. 20 at the Community Health and Wellness Center. An eight-hour driver safety course; four-hour sessions each day. Fees for AARP members and non-members. Registration is required, call 570-768-3200.
