Guthrie introduces region’s first transoral robotic surgery program
SAYRE — Guthrie Clinic has introduced the region’s first transoral robotic surgery program.
Located within the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, TORS, as the procedure is commonly referred to, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that utilizes the FDA-approved da Vinci Robotic System to assist in the removal of benign or cancerous tumors from a patient’s mouth or throat, with no external incisions.
According to Dr. Phillip Pellitteri, chief of the Department of Otolaryngology, TORS has revolutionized the way surgeons deal with head and neck cancer. By offering a robotically-assisted surgical approach, patients now can be treated with the latest technology while also decreasing the morbidity previously associated with the surgical resection of head and neck tumors.
Guthrie’s TORS program, led by Pellitteri, is comprised of specialty-trained physicians, nurses and anesthesia providers who are dedicated to providing patients with worldclass care in a hometown atmosphere.
