Cowanesque Valley Outdoors Festival seeks sponsors, vendors, volunteers

WESTFIELD – Vendors, sponsors and volunteers are sought to help with the Cowanesque Valley Outdoors Festival, which will be held Sept. 7, one mile east of here.

“The CV Outdoors Festival was designed to give families an affordable day to enjoy all the Cowanesque Valley area has to offer,” said festival coordinator CJ Houghtaling. “The festival’s focus has always been to educate the public on how to have fun safely in this area, and this year is no exception.”

Activities include archery with 3-D targets; sporting clays with shotguns; and pistol action provided by the Whispering Pines Cowboy Committee, a group of men and women who honor the cowboy ways of the Old West.

American Indian and Civil War re-enactors will be on hand, along with dinosaur bones, real moon rocks courtesy of NASA, a petting zoo, a kid’s craft tent and, of course, lots of music and food.

People who have a unique outdoor activity or sport they’d like to introduce to others, or nonprofit organizations looking for a great location to hold a “fun-raising” event are welcome to sign up.

There’s ample room for all kinds of groups to promote their organizations and educate the public while earning some money or perhaps gaining new members at the same time, Houghtaling said.

The festival also showcases many locally owned small businesses.

“For businesses that are too small to have the manpower needed to tend a booth all day, a donation to help sponsor the festival will also earn them recognition via several promotional venues,” Houghtaling said. “We have a website naming all our sponsors, as well as banners and signs on the festival grounds listing each sponsor. In addition, the more monetary support a business or individual provides, the more benefits that business or individual receives in the way of membership to the CV Joint Chamber of Commerce, along with promotional signage to keep and reuse, as well as discounts on other Chamber-related advertising opportunities.”

Details on the various levels of donations available and what aspects of the festival need sponsorship funding can be found on the website,

Vendors also may donate items to the festival’s Chinese auction.

Entertainment is the largest portion of the festival requiring sponsorship funds. Plans have been made to include the following acts this year:

Former science teacher Jeff Boyer is returning from the Adirondacks to perform three entertaining and educational shows on energy;

  • Local Patsy Cline tribute artist Penny Eckman will return to perform as the late Grand Ol’ Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame singer;
  • The Wise Guys, a duo from Addison and Corning, N.Y., will take the stage. Three-time fiddle champion Jeff Wisor will accompany guitarist Pat Carlineo as they perform a mix of popular country and bluegrass throughout the day.

Many volunteers are needed to help make this year’s event a success. Helping hands are needed not only on the festival grounds during the event, but also in preparing the grounds the day before the event and setting out signs several weeks prior to the festival.
