City authority opens watershed to hunters

More than 9,000 acres of Williamsport Municipal Water Authority lands again will be open to hunters during deer and bear seasons this year.

Those hunting dates are limited, though.

Deer hunting will be available on four days: Dec. 7, 12, 13 and 14.

Bear hunting will be available on Nov. 23 and Dec. 7.

“The part of Lycoming County, the wildlife management unit we’re in, extends their bear season up to include that first Saturday in deer season,” said Walt Nicholson, authority director of operations. “To get a permit to hunt on our property, we ask you to show your Pennsylvania hunting license and your ID to know that it’s you. If you want a second deer, you’ll need the antlerless license, and you’ll need a DMAP permit.”

There are 189 Deer Management Assistance Program permits available for the WMWA property.

Hunters may request a second DMAP permit after Nov. 1, if some are left. They may pick up applications for the permits from the water authority office and submit them to the Game Commission.

The authority will start issuing permits from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at its office at 253 W. Fourth St. Hunters under 18 must have a parent or guardian co-sign their application.

About 100 deer and 13 bears were taken last year on the authority’s property.
